Understanding and Preventing Alcohol Impotence

Many males who imbibe alcohol on a continuous basis can find themselves suffering from impotence, a form of erectile dysfunction accurately known as "alcohol impotence." Unfortunately, in a great many cases, the connection between a male's impotence and his heavier use of alcohol is not immediately made by either himself or a health care professional. The primary reason why alcohol impotence is not readily recognized is based on the fact that many men do not readily disclose the true level of their alcohol use to their doctors.

Connecting alcohol and male impotence -- the crux of alcohol impotence -- is a fairly easy to understand physiological concept. On the one hand, when a man drinks rather heavily, he can find himself suffering from what might be called temporary alcohol impotence. (Indeed, many a man will be able to recall spending a night out of the town, imbibing heavily, and then later being unable to sexually perform. This is, when all is said and done, an example of alcohol impotence of a more transitory nature.)

In addition to the a more limited or isolated incidence of alcohol impotence, a person who is a heavy drinker over an extended period of time can end up facing a far more serious condition of alcohol impotence. A problem that is hard to overlook, a person with a more serious alcohol problem can end up with a case of alcohol impotence that may never resolve itself.

Over an extended amount of time, the heavy alcohol use can cause major damage to a number bodily systems and organs. For example, alcohol can cause injury to the brain, the liver, the kidneys, the prostate, the nerves and other components of what would otherwise be a healthy male body. Heavy alcohol use can wreak havoc on the various urological systems in a man, including those connected with sexual reproduction. In the end, a man may find himself suffering from irreversible alcohol impotence. In other words, not being able to sexually perform will no longer be a matter of having one drink too many at the nightclub. Rather, alcohol impotence will become an irreversible disorder.

A few studies have shown that low amounts of certain types of alcohol can have a good effect on a person. (For example, some studies have suggested that moderate amounts of wine may be beneficial to the heart.) However, all studies conclude that heavy drinking has an adverse effect on the human body and can (and will) lead to such conditions as alcohol impotence. Therefore, if you want to ensure that you never have to face a permanent condition of alcohol impotence, you need to drink only moderate amounts of alcohol. By controlling and regulating your alcohol intake at the outset you will be in far better health overall. Additionally, you will be working to ensure that you are never plagued by a permanent condition of alcohol impotence.
